Wonderful Lazy Snow Day

Today we got 9" of snow and we're suppose to get more tonight! The kids couldn't wait to put their snow gear on and go out and play in it. I asked them to hang out and do some clean up around the house first, though, because it was snowing so hard and I had a feeling they'd want to come right back in. It was fun to watch the snow come down.

Selah and I curled up on the couch and read Little House in the Big Woods. She is hooked on the book and it's been fun to hear her talk about it. I love reading with her. We were really inspired by how they heated the maple syrup that Grandpa collected from the trees and they poured it over snow to make snow candy, so we tried it today and it worked like a charm. So fun! We put 1/2 cup Grade A maple syrup in a sauce pan and heated it over medium heat and once it came to a boil we boiled it for 5 mins. Then we poured it over clean snow. Once it was hardened we put it on a plate. It was really good!! We read that you can add butter to the maple syrup too for a little richer flavor. We just did straight syrup and thought it was great! (Fyi if you make it: it's like hard taffy, so we found it was best to suck on it. We chewed it first and it got stuck in our teeth.) :)

The first thing the kids did when they were set free outside was try to catch snow on their tongues. :) Ben was so bubbly and excited the whole time he was outside! I could just eat him up sometimes; his joy is so contagious!

The snow was too powdery to make packed snow balls, but that didn't stop them from throwing lots of snow.
